Rules and Regulations

Whereas the tech industry has overstepped its boundaries to regulate privacy.

 

Whereas the tech industry is making too much money off negative ads.

 

Whereas the tech industry has no cap on profit.

 

Whereas social media’s divisive tactics are having harmful impacts on the well-being of youth.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY LEGISLATE SENATORS VIRTUALLY ASSEMBLED THAT

Glossary of Terms:

Tech industry: For-profit social media organizations e.g. Don't forget YouTube, Netflix, Gaming

Harm: any negative psychological or mental caused by said methods

Well-being: social, emotional, and mental health

 

In a world where social media has increasingly invaded the privacy of their users, what piece of legislation can protect consumers? Write a bill addressing this problem and include a specific solution.


This bill was created at the Youth 4 Youth iSummit 2021, brought together by LookUp and the Social Dilemma. The Y4Y iSummit brings panelists together to discuss a variety of issues and solutions related to digital media and technology. Through the event, we can raise awareness, inspire, and design a more responsible digital world.


Section 1:

To keep children safe and protect them from online manipulative marketing [state] will now be required to publish an external review of the potential harms of their technology on teenager users every 3 months.


Section 2:

The state of [state] will cap profits of tech companies to $x.xx

 

Punishments:

If the report is not filed every three months a fine of $x.xx will be subjected to the said technology company.

Enforcement:

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will enforce this bill.

Enactment:
