Type: Nonprofit Social Venture Mission: LookUp is a “by youth for youth" social venture that operates at the nexus of ethical technologies and youth mental health. We’re sparking a youth-led movement that shifts social norms and reverses the harms of digital media on youth mental health, by discovering, empowering, and mobilizing youth leaders and their game-changing campaigns and solutions. Call to Action: Develop policies that protect children from the harms of digital media and unethical technologies. History: In 1997, when Susan Reynolds, a life-long educator and Co-Founder of LookUp.live, was the director of academic technology for an all-boys middle school, she witnessed the promise and peril of the internet and became deeply concerned about technology’s role in young lives. After 22 impassioned-years working on digital wellbeing, mindfulness, and youth leadership, Susan came to an “aha” moment while waiting for a flight in Santa Barbara, CA. Nearly 100% of all solutions have been designed by adults. No one was asking the kids to come up with the solution. Now, we are. Our Work: Our society is becoming more and more tech-dependent, and it’s backfiring. Young people are succumbing to the pressure of digital overload, 24/7 connectivity, and social media, which is fueling alarming rates of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and suicide. LookUp exists to give Gen Z the opportunity, platform, and agency to thrive in this digital world. Because youth agency is a core part of our DNA, instead of having adults solve a problem they haven’t lived through, we get right to the source: by listening to Millennials and Gen Z, we can use personal experience as fuel for real change. Get Involved: Go to www.lookup.mn.co and join our Community Hub - a digital campsite for our highly engaged global community of youth advocates who are equally passionate about humane technologies and digital wellbeing. LookUp hosts a year-round Internship program, a StartUp Grant Competition and Leadership Lab (for college-age students), the LookUp Challenge - Commitments to Action (for middle and high school students) and the Youth 4 Youth Digital Summit - (October 2nd). We also have a Teen Leadership Council, and Chapters forming in India, Africa, and the UK. Also - several of our Social Innovators (just like Team Legislate) have developed solutions that always need testing. Join the HUB to get involved. Type: Education, Learning, and Career Testing/Coaching Mission: Potentia Institute 21 uses cognitive science, to help adults understand their unique brains so that they can thrive in learning, work, and life. Call to Action: Universal Design for Learning, Neurodiversity in postsecondary and the workforce, learning and attentional differences, accessibility, accommodations, equity, diversity, and inclusion. History: Potentia Institute was launched in 2019 to fill a need for young adults and other people who need to understand their strengths and shore up areas where they are experiencing difficulties. The organization draws on research and evidence-based practices from cognitive, behavioral, and learning sciences to transform individual potential. We provide toolkits that help people apply strategies, technology tools, and resources to strengthen their learning, communication, collaboration, and self-advocacy. Our Work: People struggle all the time with school, work and relationships and may not know why. To maximize human potential, we believe all individuals should have the opportunity to understand their brain and have access to personalized recommendations to support their school, work, and life goals without spending thousands of dollars and hours of time, and without needing a crisis such as a school or work failure to justify one. Type: Writing Website/Newsletter Mission: Hearthside Chats hopes to bring about a calm dialogue about current events, philosophy, and culture. Founded in 2020, Hearthside Chats is a student-run news organization that seeks to not only entertain, but also bring about ideas for friendly conversation through articles and videos. Our goal is to remain as nonpartisan as possible, believing firmly in sparking ideas for opinion to be based upon rather than force our beliefs upon our readers. Call to Action: While we do not identify as a political organization and do not lead/promote political movements, we stand for ideas regarding education and political involvement. Bills advocating for educational opportunities and the involvement of youth in politics could promote our work. History: We started out as simply an Instagram account that posted some informative videos and posts. The work we do today began when we started a website in spring 2020, and since then we have been posting short articles and biweekly newsletters. Our Work: We want to expose everyday readers, kids and adults alike, to easily digestible, relevant, and fascinating concepts. These concepts range from current events to philosophy to culture, but we always want readers to gain insights, life lessons, or new knowledge from the articles. We hope to inspire people to connect with their communities and pursue an education of interest outside of school. Get Involved: Citizens who wish to access our content can simply browse our website (hearthsidechats.com) and subscribe by scrolling down the home page until reaching the subscribe button. We love feedback and comments and are looking into creating a discussion space in the future. Citizens who want to submit content or write for Hearthside on a regular basis can visit the "Contact Us" page and inquire.
